Body of miner retrieved at Sensele mine tragedy site, search for 22 others resumes

In a turn of events, the body of one miner, among the 36 who perished during a mine accident, has been retrieved as the search resumes.

On December 1, 2023, approximately 36 miners were trapped at the Sensele mine dump. Only 12 bodies were retrieved initially, with one miner miraculously rescued alive after a month-long search.

Due to the dangerous conditions—earth continuing to collapse—the government halted the search, intending to resume after the rains subsided.

However, early on Tuesday morning, reports emerged of a heavy stench emanating from one of the pits, prompting the reconstituted rescue team to retrieve a body under challenging circumstances.

Addressing the media in Chingola on Tuesday, Copperbelt Minister, Elias Matambo, recounted how the reconstituted team, upon receiving information about the foul smell, discovered the body in a preserved state.

“The body has been retrieved in a preserved state, though identification proved challenging for the family members invited,” Matambo stated.

He reassured the public that the team would spare no effort to ensure the dignified retrieval and burial of the remaining bodies.
