Government has reportedly released K7.1 million to settle allowances for the national women’s football team and athletes who competed at Ghana All African Games.
About K4.2 million had been paid to the Zambia Women National Football team for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, third round first leg against Ghana in Accra.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Lusaka on Monday where he updated the nation on a number of issues related to sports development in the country.
“About K2.9 million has been released to African games athletes who represented the country in Accra, Ghana in March, 2024,” Nkandu highlighted.
He added that government had financially supported over 40 sport codes by paying for air tickets, board and lodging during local, regional and international sporting competitions.
Nkandu stated that the athletes were expected to start receiving their money last week.
“Government will be launching the 2024 National Sports Policy this year, as well as reconstitute the National Sports I Council of Zambia board that will contribute to the revitalization of the council to operate optimally,” he said.
Nkandu stated that the Policy would focus on promoting the commercialization of sports, sports tourism, inclusiveness in sports and promotion of physical education.
