Dziwa Science and Technology ( DSaT) has challenged the government to provide information on the progress made with regard to science and technology policy.
Organization Executive Director, Veronica Mwaba, said the post COVID-19 era had seen opportunities being presented to advance national development.
Speaking during the ‘Walk for science: evidence-based science matters’ in Lusaka on Friday, Mwaba noted that over the years science and technology had advanced.
She said research showed that the world and faced challenges that required scientific innovation and effective communication.
“This is to ensure society receive accurate information on time to enhance public understanding of science. As science communicator, I believe experts have a duty to demystify science,” Mwaba stated.
She noted that people should be well knowledgeable to make informed choices toward food safety, health, climate change, Information Communications and Technologies (ICT), among others.
Mwaba said scientists were more skeptical to reach out but would rather share information peer to peer or shelve it in the journals hence the need to have the policy in place.
“People like to listen to politics stories about power, sport, entertainment and science matters are sidelined,” she added.
“One of the initiatives is the Walk for Science. This is the reason why we are gathered here today. The objective of the Walk for science agenda is to build partnerships with scientists as key sources of information,” she added.
Mwaba expressed hope that Dziwa Science efforts would build a larger network and together make science more visible on selected media channels.
Ministry of Technology and Science Assistant Director, Mwelwa Munsaka, said the application of science, technology and innovation was crucial for socio-economic development across various sectors.
“However for science, technology and innovation to significantly impact society and contribute to national development, there must be widespread public appreciation and awareness of its applications,” Munsaka noted.
