The Tanzania Ports Authority has revised downwards Wharfage port charges for containerised cargo to Zambia by more than 50 percent.
According to a notice to that effect, the revision of the port charges had been made in order to attract more customers to get better services at cheaper prices.
The decision was also said to aim at promoting trade by serving Zambia cargo volumes through the Dar-es-Salaam Port and other major ports that included Tanga and Mtwara.
Transport and Logistics Minister, Frank Tayali, announced the development in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday.
The Minister noted that the decision by the Authority would help reduce the cost of doing business.
“The comment follows the announcement issued by the High Commission of the United Republic of Tanzania in Lusaka,” Tayali said.
He highlighted that that the previous charges for FLC Container–Imports for 20ft which stood at US$240 had been reduced to US$90, while 40ft which were at US$420 was reduced to US$180.

Tayali said previous charges for FLC Container-Exports of 20ft that stood at US$ 160 had been reduced to US$75 while 40ft which attracted US$ 280 had been revised to US$150.
“The move is welcome and clearly demonstrates the spirit of good neighbourliness between the two countries whose relationship goes back to the days of the founding fathers, Julius Nyerere and Dr. Kenneth Kaunda,” he added.
The Minister said this positive gesture by Tanzania granted to Zambia demonstrated the huge gains that the country was poised to gain from the economic diplomacy espoused by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Tayali called on the Zambian business community to take advantage of the gesture and grow their business.
