ZESCO announces importation of power from Mozambique to address shortfalls

ZESCO has announced an amendment of its existing power purchase agreement with Electricidade de Mozambique (EDM), a state-owned power utility company.

The power utility company’s Managing Director, Victor Mapani, signed the agreement with his counterpart at EDM, Marcelino Alberto.

This is according to a statement issued on Thursday by ZESCO.

Mapani said an additional 40 megawatts would be added to the existing 50 megawatts off-peak power.

He noted that the amendment extended the original 50 megawatts off-peak power supply agreement by an additional year.

“This amendment comes as a critical step in the series of mitigating measures introduced in March to combat the energy challenges Zambia is currently facing,” Mapani said.

He said the additional power supply would be prioritised for sectors crucial to Zambia’s economy, including manufacturing, agriculture and essential services.

Mapani explained that the strategic focus aimed to ensure that the country’s economic drivers remained robust and supported during the time electricity scarcity.

“The amendment is a testament to the strong partnership between Zesco and EDM and our shared commitment to ensuring the stability and growth of Zambia’s economy.

“By securing an additional power supply, we are taking significant steps towards mitigating the current power challenges and ensuring that our nation’s critical sectors remain operational and productive,” he said.
