President Hakainde Hichilema is elated with the recognition of Zambia as being among the top three most democratising countries in the world by V-Dem.
Zambia was recently named among the top three most democratising countries in the world by V-Dem.
The President said this when he addressed Parliament on the progress made in the application of national values and principles in Lusaka on Friday.
He stated that the recognition by V-Dem underscored government’s continuous efforts to promote the virtues of democracy, good governance and the rule of law.
“In this regard, we are delighted and honoured that Zambia has been named among the top three most democratising countries in the world, by v-dem,” Hichilema said.
He assured the nation of his government’s commitment to deepening the country’s democracy and constitutionalism as the surest way through which Zambians can be assured of their freedoms and right to participate in decision making.
Hichilema added that government had made it possible for 44 new radio stations and 18 new television stations to be licensed countrywide.
“This is in order to broaden the ever-expanding democratic space which this government has created, and also increase the access to information,” the President said.
He said these facilities can operate freely and without any interference whatsoever from government.
Hichilema stated that more significantly, political parties and civil society organisations were now able to make full use of these facilities, to advance their agenda.

“Further, to provide access to the ZNBC signal for radio 1 and 2, 15 new FM transmitters have been installed in some rural districts of eastern, northern, western, southern, Luapula and Muchinga provinces,” he added.
Hichilema also said to enhance the participation of eligible voters in elections, government had undertaken a continuous roll-out of the voter registration programme in line with the electoral process act.
He added that the programme now covered all the 10 provincial centres of the country.
“To strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks for upholding the rule of law, government has enacted the judicial training institute of Zambia Act no. 14 of 2023 which establishes the judicial training institute,” Hichilema said.
He stated the institute would facilitate continuous professional development for the country’s judges, judicial officers and judicial staff.
