President Hakainde Hichilema has confered the status of State Counsel on Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Jack Mwiimbu, and Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti.

The President also confered the same status on Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson, Mwaangala Zaloumis, Ashad Abudular Dudia and Emily Sakala.

Hichilema further appointed Ambassador Lazarus Kapambwe as his Special Envoy at State House, Dr. Cholwe Beyani as Civil Service Commission Chairperson and Beatrice Mpuka as Deputy Director-General of the Drug Enforcement Commission.

The Head of State announced the appointments in Lusaka on Wednesday during the swearing in ceremony held at State House.

He also appointed Father Joe Komakoma as Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission.

“Carry your appointments with diligence because a huge responsibility has been bestowed on you to assist the country keep justice,” Hichilema advised.

The President cautioned the appointed persons against laxity, saying work had just began, saying that as a State Counsel, they could no longer stagger from the bar to their car.

He stated that the appointed officials should be the mirror of not only their professions but the communities at large.

“I am happy that out of the five appointed State Counsels, three are women, which goes to show that we are trying to be gender balanced in all areas,” Hichilema said.

The President reiterated the need to amend the Constitution in order to allow more women to participate in public administration.

Hichilema further cautioned the newly appointed Drug Enforcement Commission Deputy Director-General against competing with the Director-General but instead work together as a team.

“Do not rush to arresting suspects before carrying out a thorough investigation, I repeat, we don’t need guns to arrest people but issue a call out and if someone fails to show up then go to court,” he advised.
