Socialist Party president, M’membe, appears in court, espionage case adjourned to March 26

Socialist Party president, Fred M’membe, on Wednesday appeared at the Lusaka Magistrate Court on an alleged offence of espionage.

M’membe could, however, not be committed to the High Court because the Director of Public Prosecutions, Gilbert Phiri, was yet to issue such instructions.

Magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli adjourned the matter to March 26 for mention awaiting the DPP’s consent for committal.

M’membe, 64, is charged with Espionage contrary to Section 3 of the the State Securities Act chapter 111 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that on an unknown date but between the August 26 and September 16, 2023 at Lusaka, M’membe jointly and whilst acting together with others for any purpose prejudicial to the safety or interests of the Republic did in a documentary which was published and communicated on different media platforms titled “The Grand Regional Scheme: How Foreign Powers and Local elites are destroying Africa Part 1” did give information which might be or is intended to be directly or indirectly useful to a foreign power.
