The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has announced the employment of 314 health workers from the 853 volunteers who were placed in different cholera centres.
President Hakainde Hichilema recently directed the Ministry of Health to employ all the voluteers who were working in the various Cholera Centres in the country.
Updating the nation at media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday, Commission Chairperso, Dr Choolwe Beyani, said a thorough validation process was undertaken to ensure that no volunteer was omitted from the list.
He said the Commission wanted to ensure that the only shortlisted persons were those who, for the love of mankind, risked their health to save others despite the fact that no reward in form of a salary or allowance was expected.
“As directed by the President, the Commission, working with the Ministry of Health and the Public Service Management Division, undertook to identify vacant positions created through natural attrition, that is through demises, retirements, promotions and dismissals among others,” Beyani stated.
He added that over 314 positions had been identified and that these included 95 Junior Resident Medical Officers, 100 Registered Nurses, 28 Clinical Officer General, 46 environmental health technicians and 15 medical laboratory technicians.
Beyani identified others as six pharmacy technologists, 19 public health nurses, four bio-medical scientists and one pharmacist bringing the total to 314.
“This is against the background of 853 validated health professional volunteers in all the cholera centers. The Commission has proceeded to appoint the 314 health workers as phase one of the process,” he said.
Beyani stated that this would continue in a phased approach until all the volunteers had been absorbed.
He said the process to validate the volunteers under the general worker category was still on-going and that once the process was completed, the numbers for the general workers that would be absorbed in phase two would be announced.
“We therefore appeal for patience as the Commission is working round the clock to ensure that all the volunteers are absorbed into the civil service,” Benyal appealed.
