Government is concerned that many children in Rufunsa District of Lusaka Province are abandoning school for illegal gold mining.
Rufunsa District Commissioner, Richard Mabena, said government had stepped up efforts to encourage children to get back to school for their bright future.
Mabena said this in Rufunsa on Saturday when ChildFund Zambia paid a courtesy call on him on the eve of the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) which was commemorated on March 3.
“ICDB is a special day when children take over TV and radio stations to air their views on various issues affecting their lives,” the Rufunsa District Commissioner noted.
He said the Labour Office had dispatched officers to various gold mining sites to address the challenge.

“Zambia is a signatory to international treaties on ending child labour and will not allow children to be involved in illegal gold mining,” Mabena stated.
During the same meeting, Chief Mpanshya’s Advisor Charles Chibulo said all Headmen and women had been engaged to sensitize parents against sending children to conduct illegal gold mining.
