Govt cautions gambling industry against exposing minors to harmful practices

Government has cautioned players in the betting and gambling industry against irresponsible betting and exposing children to harmful practices.

Ministry of Tourism, Permanent Secretary, Evans Muhanga, said as government harnessed the potential of the industry to drive the expansion of the tourism sector, it was paramount to prioritise the well-being and safety of the citizens.

Muhanga said this during the launch of Betway Zambia Customer Centre in Lusaka on Thursday.

He noted that collaborative efforts between the betting industry and relevant stakeholders are essential in establishing and enforcing responsible gambling protocols.

“This will ensure that individuals are safeguarded from potential harm and ensure the sustainability of the industry as a whole,” Muhanga stated.

He noted that in recent years, Zambia had witnessed the emergence of the gambling and betting industry as dynamic force on the tourism landscape.

Muhanga said through the seamless integration of technology and entertainment, the industry had transcended its traditional boundaries to become a catalyst for innovation and growth within the tourism sector.

“The gambling and betting industry has been instrumental in driving this transformative journey forward,” he stated.

Muhanga noted that through innovative platforms and expansive networks, the industry had not only enriched the entertainment landscape for visitors but had also amplified Zambia’s visibility as premier tourist destination on the global stage.

Earlier, Betway Zambia Chief Operations Officer, Travis Mulenga, said the company’s commitment to responsible betting practices remained unwavering.

“We are dedicated to either well-being and safety of our customers through rigorous responsible gaming protocols, educational initiatives and access to support services,” Mulenga assured.
