Council of Churches calls on politicians to exercise caution in utterances, uphold Zambia’s unity

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has called on all political actors to be careful in their utterances as they have the potential to divide the country.

CCZ General-Secretary, Father Emmanuel Chikoya, also called on all actors and Zambians in general to uphold the principles of unity, inclusivity and respect for all citizens regardless of ethnicity or region.

Chikoya in a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday noted the need for a renewed commitment to constructive dialogue and responsible leadership for the betterment of Zambia and its people.

He expressed hope that the government and all political stakeholders would take decisive action to curb hate speech and promote a more harmonious and united Zambia.

“The CCZ further wishes to strongly condemn and express deep concern the celebration made by the Chief Government Spokesperson regarding the tribal remarks made by Chishimba Kambwili against a specific region,” Chikoya said.

He noted that such divisive rhetoric was hostile to Zambian values and had no place in the country’s political discourse.

Chikoya further commended the government for its commitment not to obstruct the registration of the newly formed United Kwacha Alliance (UKA).

“This gesture signifies a significant stride towards promoting democracy and fostering a mature political culture in Zambia, recognizing the pivotal role of opposition political parties in national development,” he stated.

Chikoya said in light of the formation of UKA, CCZ hoped for collaborative efforts between the alliance and the government in fostering national unity and development.

He emphasized the importance of government engaging all stakeholders, including the church, civil society organizations and opposition political parties on several issues.

“This is in addressing issues affecting the Zambian populace, particularly the escalating cost of living and also availability of stable commodities like mealie meal,” Chikoya stated.

He emphasized that inclusive dialogue was essential for national progress.
