The Japanese government has given Zambia a grant amounting to JPY 89.3 million (about US$0.63 million).
The funds would be donated by the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA).
Zambia’s Ambassador to Japan Dr, Tobias Mulimbika, commended JICA for the Cultural Grant Assistance to Zambia amounting to US$.63 million.
Mulimbika made the remarks during the financial bid opening for the Improvement of Equipment for Research, Conservation, Exhibition and Education at the Livingstone Museum held at the Japan International Cooperation System (JICS), Tokyo.
This is according to a statement issued in Lusaka by Zambia’s First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Embassy in Japan, Faith Chilube.
The Ambassador added that Zambia’s tourism sector had the potential to contribute effectively to the country’s economic development.
“The sector offers numerous opportunities ranging from wildlife and natural resources to cultural heritage, that if well harnessed, may effectively contribute to job creation and income generation,” Mulimbika stated.
He said the improvement of equipment for research, conservation, exhibition and education project aims to preserve Zambian culture and heritage.
Mulimbika stated that this was being done while increasing tourist visits to Livingstone town and the rest of the country.
“Once completed the project will contribute to infrastructure development and will help conserve the country’s cultural heritage,” the Ambassador noted.
JICS President, Takeuchi Kazuki, said the project would also increase Japanese tourists to Zambia and further enhance international and domestic tourism.
“Established in 1989, JICS supports the implementation of Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes and acts as a procurement expert in the international cooperation field,” Kazuki stated.
He said its core operations focus on serving as a procurement agent for the governments of recipient countries, including activities such as procurement of materials, equipment, components and procurement-related management.
