Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board raises meal allowance for students

The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) has announced an increase in meal allowances from K22.50 to K25 for public University students.

HELSB Senior Corporate Communications Officer, Chiselwa Kawanda, said the decision was in line with the Boards commitment to ensuring that students receive adequate support for their nutritional needs during their academic pursuits.

Kawanda in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, disclosed that the Board also resolved to implement a uniform accommodation fee for all students across universities.

She stated that the fee would be based on the charges applicable to each university, streamlining the accommodation cost structure.

“This decision is intended to create a fair and consistent approach to accommodation charges, promoting transparency and equity,” Kawanda said.

She stated that the payment of registration fees on a need basis had also been approved, meaning that the registration fees would be covered for students based on their financial need.

Kawanda emphasized that the measure aimed to alleviate the financial burden on students and ensure that no deserving student was denied access to education due to financial constraints.

“These resolutions underscore HELSB’s commitment to fostering an environment that supports the academic success and well-being of students,” she said.

Kawanda hoped that these decisions would contribute positively to the overall educational experience of the beneficiaries of the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board.

She stated that the decisions aimed at enhancing the welfare and support for students under the student loans scheme.

“Currently, HELSB is sponsoring over 28,705 students in 8 public universities, namely Chalimbana University, Copperbelt University, Kapasa Makasa University, Mulungushi University, Palabana University, and the University of Zambia,” Kawanda revealed.
