Kitwe council claims 4,000 bottles of chlorine ready for distribution to tackle cholera

Kitwe City Council Public Relations Manager, Mwaka Nakweti, says the local authority has commenced the distribution of over 4000 bottles of chlorine to households in cholera risk areas.

The Water, Sanitation, and Disinfection Team focused their efforts in Luyando and Mulenga townships, inspecting and chlorinating over 300 wells.

Nakweti said in a statement on Saturday that the initiative directly benefited 996 households, with the distribution of over 266 bottles of chlorine to households.

Additionally, 445 households were engaged in educational sessions on proper water disinfection using liquid chlorine, she said.

“The inspectorate team inspected 52 bars and restaurants in St. Anthony, Kandabwe, Chimwemwe, KCC and Kamonga. From the places inspected, 31 establishments were found fully compliant with health and safety standards.

“However, 11 premises have been recommended for closure due to identified health hazards, and 10 have been issued inspection reports outlining necessary improvements,” she stated.

Nakweti added that the local authority had undertaken a decisive measure to address the misuse of mobile money booths in the Central Business District (CBD) as conveniences rooms.

“During last night’s operation, a total of 91 mobile money booths were removed from the CBD. This action brings the cumulative number of booths removed to 139. Unfortunately, these booths have been used as makeshift toilets which pose a severe health risk to the public,” she revealed.

Nakweti further disclosed that a team of Health Education Officers conducted one-on-one educational sessions, reaching over 300 individuals at St. Anthony, Kandabwe, Chimwemwe Markets and Stink Charcoal Market.
