As the number of cholera cases escalates, with more than 170 deaths reported so far, President Hakainde Hichilema says no shallow wells will be tolerated across the country.
In post on his official Facebook handle on Saturday, President Hichilema directed that going forward there would be no shallow wells.
“As President of Zambia, I am directing that going forward, there shall be no more shallow wells as a source of drinking water in Lusaka and other urban areas,” he directed.

President Hichilema also added that the government would keep monitoring the cholera situation around the country, particularly in Lusaka.
“Government will continue putting measures to contain the situation. We repeat the call on our citizens to adhere to the health guidelines being given by competent health authorities,” he emphasized.
President Hichilema added that the country could only defeat cholera if all work together.
“Take measures to avoid contracting the disease is our call to action,” he stated.
Since the outbreak in October last year, cases have escalated to more than 4,000 with more than 170 fatalities.
