The first Africa’s “30 Mining Impact Champions” ranking which aims to analyse developments and identify trends and significant changes in the sector has positioned ZCCM-IH on number 25th.
The ranking, developed by the Africa Business+ in collaboration with Ernst & Young (EY), was released this week.
The “30 Mining Impact Champions” was a new ranking of mining companies on the African Continent that had significant local economic impact in the region in which they operated.
Zambia, through ZCCM-IH, had been ranked fifth from the six African countries whose firms made it to “30 Mining Impact Champions.”
The ranking evaluated the rising importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESGs) factors in the mining sector.
It revealed that the top 30 companies had contributed a significant US$15 billion in fiscal and social contributions and created 250,000 direct jobs.
Africa’s mining giants occupied the top spots by the scale of their financial contribution and the number of employees needed to operate their assets.
Anglo-American, Glencore, Barrick Gold Corp, OCP, First Quantum Minerals, Sibanye Stillwater and Anglogold Ashanti all featured in the Top 30.
According to Moez Ajmi, partner at EY, “This first-ever ranking of mining companies according to their economic impact will make it easier to understand the orders of magnitude of the local contribution made by mining investors and to compare them with each other.”
