UPND youth chapter calls for unity of purpose, as country mourns victims of Chingola mine

United Party for National Development (UPND) provincial youth Chairperson, Warren Hinyama, has called for unity of purpose as the country mourns victims of Chingola mine tragedy.

“There is need for unity of purpose from opposition political parties following a mine accident in which more than 30 miners were trapped at Senseli open pit mine in Chingola,” Hinyama said.

He said during a media briefing in Chingola on Saturday that the party had noted with concern that some opposition political parties had started politicizing the mine accident.

Hinyama said this was time for the country to unite regardless of political affiliations.

He urged critics of the ruling party not to politick on a matter that needed urgent attention.

Hinyama said the mine accident which happened last week was not the first of its kind in the country.

“Ministers have camped in Chingola to try their best to render support to the families and those working on retrieving the bodies trapped, we won’t allow few individuals with wrong motives to disturb the efforts being made,” he said.

Party Deputy Youths Chairperson for Politics, Kangwa Kamando, said the Copperbelt main stay was mining, therefore it was time to help the government retrieve the bodies and lessen the burden of the affected families.

He said the ultimate goal was to make the mining sector safer for the young people and formalise it.
