Anti-Corruption agency arrests Kalomo district council official for allegedly stealing £41,350

The Anti-Corruption commission (ACC) in Chirundu has arrested Mathews Mashapi, Director of works at Kalomo District Council in Southern Province, for corrupt practices involving £41,350 and a Toyota Hilux.

ACC Head of Corporate Communications, Timothy Moono, said Mashapi, aged 49, of High cost, Chirundu town council in Chirundu District has been charged with one count of corrupt practices by Public Officer.

Moono in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, said Mashapi committed an offence which was contrary to Section 19(1).

He said this was as read with Section 41 of the Anti-Corruption Act No. 3 of 2012 of the Laws of Zambia.

Moono narrated that Mashapi, on dates unknown but between January, 1, 2013 and December, 30, 2013 in the Kalomo, did receive a Toyota Hilux as reward in order to facilitate payment of £41,350.

“This reward is part of the second installment of 25 percent of the contract sum from the Constituency Development Funds to Techimiya Commercials,” he said.

Moono stated that this was before the equipment had reached Walvis in Namibia as per agreement.

“He has since been released on Bond,” he said.
