Chief government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, has said that President Hakainde Hichilema was not afraid of being held accountable and transparent in the management of public affairs.
Mweetwa said this was the main reason why, when he ascended power, Hichilema repealed the law on defamation of the President.
The Minister of Information and Media told Journalists in Lusaka on Friday, after attending Parliament, that the Head of State had gone ahead to ensure that the Access to Information Bill was tabled before Parliament for scrutiny and possible enactment into law.
He said Hichilema deserved a pat on the back for walking the talk by ensuring that he delivered on the promises he made when he was in the opposition.
“It is important for us as government. Through the President, we walk the talk. This is what Hichilema promised through campaigns way back in 2006 and 2011,” Mweetwa said.
He said Hichilema had delivered on what many politicians who served in past administrations failed to deliver, even frowning frequently when called upon to implement the law.
On the Public Order Act, Mweetwa said the draft document which had been going through consultations would soon be taken to Parliament as well.
“I want to take this opportunity to indicate that the Public Order Act (POA) is within the processes that will see the same brought before the doors of Parliament,” he said.
Mweetwa added that there was just one or two clauses which were being fine tuned in consultations with stakeholders in order to avoid a lot of debate and ensure that it was expeditiously enacted into law.
He said the law would be repealed in line with the Presidential directive that Parliamentary business should be done quickly.
