Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia raises the alarm on threat to national peace, stability

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has said that the current volatile political environment in the country was possing a threat to national peace and unity.

EFZ Board Chairperson, Paul Mususu, has called on political party leaders to work towards preserving the adored and cherished national peace which Zambia had enjoyed for the last 59 years.

During a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Mususu reminded political leaders and Zambians in general to invest great efforts in strengthening governance institutions and begin to observe acceptable democratic tenets.

He said it was important for all to observe the democratic tenets not only for the current generation but for the future as well.

“The yearning for national unity has been inculcated in us since inception through the “One Zambia, One Nation” motto by the Freedom Fighters who paid dearly for the freedom we enjoy today,” Mususu said.

He added that when democratically elected leaders begin to engage in undemocratic maneuvers, this raises concern among citizens as it threatens their national peace.

Mususu said Zambians should not allow narrow and short term political goals to frustrate and detract them from their mandate and responsibility of creating an environment where everyone is treated in a humane way.

“We urge our political leaders from both the ruling and the opposition to desist from talking at each other and begin to talk to each other in order to help strengthen the democratic governance and preserve the peace we enjoy,” he said.

Mususu cautioned that Zambians should not allow political leaders with short term power play and have no interest of the nation to destroy their much cherished peace but stand up and defend it.

The EFZ Board Chairperson also indicated that the Church was ready to mediate in any political wrangle that threatens the peace of the country like it had done in the past.
