Govt says over K1.2 million released for roads works in Chirundu district

Government says it has released over K1.2 million for the construction of roads in Chirundu district of Southern Africa.

The funds were reportedly released under the 2023 Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

This is according to a statement made available to Zambia Monitor on Thursday.

Chirundu Town Council Director of Works, Mathews Mashapi, explained that the roads to be worked on would link wards under the Chirundu Constituency, making traveling safe and reduce distances.

Mashapi made these remarks after he inspected progress made on road development in the area on Wednesday.

“Graveling of roads which commenced in August this year was progressing and had reached above 55 percent,” he said.

Mashapi said works could not move at a faster pace as roads were being created from scratch as opposed to maintenance.

He added that the local authority had given priority to areas that completely had no accessibility regarding road systems.

“Chirundu Council is eager to develop a good road network for communities in Chirundu in order to stimulate development and commercial activities,” Mashapi said.

He noted that a good road network remained key in linking business and alleviating poverty.

“For decades Chirundu District has been grappling with a poor road system which has started to receive attention following an increase of CDF from K1.6 million to K30.6 million,” Mashapi said.
