Suspended lawmakers accuse speaker Mutti of plotting to manipulate constitution in their absence

Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti, has no right to suspend legislators who have moved a motion of impeachment against her, suspended Members of Parliament (MP) have claimed.

Speaking on behalf of the suspended lawmakers immediately after on Tuesday, Mporokoso MP, Brian Mundubile, accused Mutti of losing her mandate to run Parliament the moment the petition to impeach her reached the required threshold.

The motion to impeach Mutti was slated for Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Mundubile called on Zambians not to retreat from the fight for democracy, which he claimed was being destroyed by the United Party for National Development (UPND). It added that the struggle should not be left to the Patriotic Front (PF) only because should the plan to undo democracy succeeds, everyone would be injured.

“I am calling on the Members of Parliament that have remained in Parliament not to allow the UPND to sneak in clauses into the Constitution that had been rejected by Zambians.

“The mass suspension of the opposition lawmakers was premeditated so that Parliament could illegally ratify the appointment of the constitutionally barred Auditor General Roy Mwambwa, expunge the clause of running mate and the 50%+1 as well as sneaking in the laws that shall legalise LGBTQ,” he claimed.

Lukasha lawmaker, George Chisanga, accused the UPND government of going round Zambia to check the registers of the PF, all in an effort to legitimise the illegal election of expelled Matero MP, Miles Sampa, as the PF president.

Chisanga said the efforts to legitimise the purported election of Sampa was meant to pile pressure on the Registrar of Societies to quickly change the list of office bearers of the PF.

“During the period the 20 members of parliament have been suspended, the UPND through two of their members shall move a motion in Parliament to appoint a commission of inquiry into financial flaws in the country between the 2011 and 2021 excluding the period that they have been in power,” he claimed.
