Acting Auditor-General, Ron Mwambwa, has called on financial auditors in the country to keep abreast with improvements in technology and be able to audit Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) systems.
Mwambwa said the financial auditors should also help government address the ever increasing cyber security issues reported across the country.
The acting Auditor-General said this during the African Organisations of Supreme Audit Institutions of English Speaking Countries (AOSAIESC) workshop in Lusaka on Monday.
He noted that President Hakainde Hichilema had emphasized that ICT played a crucial role in Zambia’s job creation agenda as well as curbing revenue leakages.
“ICT will play a crucial role in increasing compliance to laws and in improving collection of non tax revenue through the use of ICT platforms,” Mwambwa said.
He said the objective of the workshop which was hosted in Zambia on Monday involving participants from other countries was to introduce and equip Financial Auditors with skills to assess information systems that produce the financial statements.
Mwambwa said the objective was well couched in that it sought to ensure that attendant risks associated with information system generation of financial statements were assessed and communicated to the audited entities for corrective action.
“By doing this timely, it will help our government to save public resources,” he said.

Secretary to the Treasury, Felix Nkulukusa, said government was changing the way it conducted public affairs by embracing information systems in order to enhance efficiency of operations.
Nkulukusa said there was need to respond to the changing environment in which audits had to be conducted if they are to be cost effective.
“The old ways of looking at huge box files, ticking each payment voucher and assessing control manually by following an audit trail must be a thing of the past as there is an efficient way of doing it,” he said.
Nkulukusa urged the financial auditors to foster improvement in transparency, accountability and prudent management of public resources through their audit work.
