100 million cubic meters of rain water wasted,’ Minister Syakalima urges water harvesting

Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, has implored graduates at the University of Lusaka, UNILUS, to help grow the agriculture sector through utilising ground water and promoting irrigation.

Syakalima noted that about 100 million cubic meters of rain water were wasted during rainy season and over 65 million of cubic meters of underground water remained unutilised.

He was speaking when he officiated at the UNILUS 14th graduation ceremony in Lusaka on Friday.

Syakalima is optimistic that graduates could leave a legacy by identifying opportunities in the untapped irrigation sector and utilise the vast arable land the country possessed.

“I wonder why Zambia’s agriculture sector has always suffered when the country has vast unutilised land and pretty of water,” he said.

Syakalima said graduates needed to be innovative because time to look for white-collar jobs was long gone, and that it was, therefore, important to take advantage of the problem by providing a solution.

Speaking earlier, UNILUS Chancellor, Caleb Fundanga, said finding solutions to the challenges the country was facing would not only create jobs but also contribute to the growth of the economy.

Fundanga said Zambia would not be the same if young people became innovative.

Meanwhile, UNILUS Vice Chancellor, Pinalo Chifwanakeni, said the university offers quality education which would be used by students to bring change in the country.
