She said the restoration of student meal allowances and many other related government programmes were evidence of government’s commitment to bettering the lives of the people.

The Vice President said this last night when she presided over hoisting of the flag on the eve of independence in Lusaka.

Nalumango noted that in order to maintain the bond of unity that the forefathers exhibited, government had embarked on an ambitious and robust plan to rebuild the country socially and economically.

She said government wants to accelerate this plan through equitable distribution of resources.

Nalumango explained that the tradition of hoisting the flag when singing the national anthem at midnight was of great importance and should be sustained.

The Vice President stated that lives were lost for the freedom the people are enjoying today, adding that hard work and prayers should be the order of the day so as to maintain the freedom.

“As we celebrate independence, I am calling upon the Zambian people to refrain from all the vices that have potential to destroy our hard earned peace and freedom must be rewarded at all cost.

Nalumango further implored people to understand the colours on the national flag, what they symbolize and also to educate the young ones on the same.

And, speaking at the same event, Lusaka Province Minister, Sheal Mulyata, urged Zambians to remain united even after the independence celebrations.
