Copper Queens reach semifinals after walloping Comoros 5-1 at COSAFA Championship

Zambia confirmed its place in the semifinals of the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship after thumping Comoros 5-1 in a deciding Group B match played in Gauteng on Tuesday.

The defending champions were dominant against a Comoros side that was already eliminated going into the match.

Fridah Kabwe who was the hat-trick hero opened the scoring for Zambia after 20 minutes, but the goal was cancelled by Mohamed Rouika four minutes before half time.

In the second half, Kabwe scored her second goal before the hour mark, which was then followed by a quick goal from captain Lushomo Mwemba a minute later.

In the 74th minute Kabwe scored her third goal of the match, completing an impressive hattrick in the process.

As if it was not enough, Sarah Jere converted a penalty four minutes to the final whistle at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto.

The result means the Copper Queens finish top of the group, tied on seven points with Mozambique, who defeated Angola in the other decider played at Dobsonville stadium.

Mozambique needed a late penalty from Amelia Banze to win and finish as best runners up at their coach’s former ground.
