President Hakainde Hichilema has called for the acceleration of digital advancements not only in Zambia but Africa at large to spur economic activities.
Hichilema said this would help to operationalise the push for non-stop border posts to support the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA).
The Head of State said this when he officially opened Zambia’s Inaugural Digital Government Africa Summit 2023, on Thursday in Chongwe District, Lusaka Province.
“Digital transformation was key on the path towards growing the economies, creating jobs and opportunities,” he said.

Hichilema added that Zambia with her rich mineral endowment would greatly benefit from applications in Artificial Intelligence (AI) that would facilitate mineral mapping and precision mining.
“Digitisation offers Africa and her young population an opportunity to leapfrog technology, bringing on board citizens from every corner of the continent,” he said.
Zambia has been proposed to be the first country in which a digital payment platform pilot project would be undertaken to promote financial inclusion in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region.
The President noted that it would also help in catalyzing progress by enabling the economies to operate 24/7.
In attendance at the Summit was former British Minister Tony Blair with whom Hichilema had a fireside chat about Africa’s digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI).
