Police in Itezhi Tezhi District of Southern Province have arrested 27 suspects to help with investigations in the looting of over 300 bags of maize, a lawmaker has revealed.
Some Itezhi Tezhi residents on Thursday night followed suite their Mumbwa colleagues and ransacked a maize depot purporting that it was linked to Mumbwa slain business man Ernest ‘Yakaipa’ Sikaonga who had been linked to ritual murders in the District.
Itezhi Tezhi Member of Parliament, Twaambo Mutinta, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Friday warned against riotous and criminal behaviour in the District.
Mutinta also disclosed that 200 bags of maize have so far been recovered from the operation.
“The maize has no connection to the mentioned individual but belonged to an individual identified as Chikalala,” he said.
Mutinta said the struggle to bring in security slowed the process of bringing calm but the reinforcement of security from Namwala, Choma and officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife helped bring sanity by Thursday night.
He urged any aggrieved members of the community to allow the law to take its course.
“I am just happy that no life or property was lost and the situation remains calm but people should not take advantage of the volatile situation in Mumbwa to carry out criminal activities reiterating that criminality will not be condoned.
A rioting mob on Wednesday burnt two people to death in Mumbwa District after information went round that another person had been killed and private parts removed.
Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, identified the two who had been killed as prominent Nkeyema businessman Sikaonga Enerst, popularly known as Yakaipa, and his friend David Mwakiyoma, a Tanzanian.

He disclosed that various public buildings had been destroyed by the rioting residents among them a Veterinary office which had been burnt to ashes, while windows for the Police, Immigration and National Registration offices were all broken down.
“Two people have been killed in Mumbwa District by an irate mob during a riot after information went round that another person had been killed,” Mwale said in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday.
