Again, ex-President Lungu reportedly stopped from honouring event as veterans condemn act

The Former Freedom Fighters’ Association of Zambia says stopping former President Edgar Lungu from attending a church service in Ndola was an infringement on the former Head of State’s rights.

Copperbelt Chapter Chairperson, John Waluka, said Zambians should not keep quiet when their freedoms were being infringed upon.

Waluka said in an interview on Tuesday with Zambia Monitor that stopping former President Edgar Lungu at the airport and subsequently cancelling the church service he was supposed to attend was very wrong.

“Where are we heading to as a country, you mean there is freedom in this country? No! We are getting worried, majority are afraid to speak and even those who were in the forefront supporting the current government in opposition, they have gone quiet,” he said.

Waluka said the government should desist from acts that infringe on people’s rights but uphold human rights.

He said people should not pretend that there was unity in the country because what was prevailing, especially the airport incident, did not warrant that.

On Saturday, September 9, 2023, police reportedly stopped a church service that was to be attended by Lungu and his wife, Esther, amid fears of a crackdown against Patriotic Front (PF) members.

Lungu and his wife had travelled to Ndola for a church function held at St. Andrews Church, which was to be hosted by the Ndola Pastors’ Fellowship, but police allegedly cancelled the event citing security concerns.
