Nchelenge couple, three children perish in Lake Mweru canoe disaster

A couple, including their three children, have reportedly drowned in Lake Mweru in Luapula’s Nchelenge district.

According to police, three children and their parents met their fate when the canoe they were in capsized as a result of strong winds.

Luapula Police Chief, Fwambo Siame, said in a statement on Tuesday that the family drowned while crossing the lake on Monday around 08:00 hours.

The deceased have been identified as Diwell Chongo, 25, Memory Ndebele, 23, Mpundu and Kapya who are twins, aged 2, and Albertina Kabemba of unknown age.

Three bodies have been retrieved while the search for the other victims has continued.

“The bodies of all the three children have been found and buried as authorities search for the bodies of the parents,” Siame said.
