The 2023 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS) has commenced. It is aimed at establishing the challenges and successes of the policies being implemented in the sector.
This would be the seventh Zambia Demographic and Health Survey to be implemented by the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the University Teaching Hospital Virology Laboratory.
Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary-in-charge of Administration, Professor Christopher Simoonga, said government wanted to determine the impact of the policies it was implementing in areas such as family planning, maternal health and child health among others.
Simoonga said this during the opening of the 2023 Zambia Demographic and Health Survey pre-test training in Lusaka on Sunday.
“This will give an opportunity to government officials to interact with the community and get their input on the activities and policies being implemented and understand their impact,” he said.
Simoonga said the ZDHS provided an opportunity to form policy and provide data for planning, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of national health programmes.

He said it was designed to provide up-to-date information on health indicators, including fertility levels, nuptiality, sexual activity, fertility preferences, awareness and use of family planning methods.
“It is also designed to provide information on breastfeeding practices, nutritional status of children, early childhood and maternal mortality, maternal and child health, awareness and behaviors regarding HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, and prevalence of HIV,” Simoonga said.
He appealed to Zambians to cooperate with enumerators who would be going out to collect the data in the various communities.
