The Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) says it has put in place mechanisms to install 300 communication towers countrywide by 2025.
Hanford Chaaba, ZICTA Manager Corporate Communication, said the communication towers would be set up in strategic place to ensure Zambia had internet connection, including in rural areas.
“Between now and 2025 we have put in place mechanisms to have 300 communication towers done. These communications are going to aid communication in strategic places and remember this comes from our universal and service fund.
“Our goal is to have these communication towers with the hope that other stakeholders will also come on board to bridge the other numbers,” Chaaba said on Saturday in interview at the just ended 95th Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka.

He said ZICTA had developed a universal access master plan to provide guidance on how many communication towers were needed to cover the entire country.
The document, he said, also provided guidance on how much fibre was required to be able to cover the entire country as well as how many computers were needed.
“So far from what we have noted is that for the regulator to be able to cover the entire country we need 990 communication towers.
“We feel that with this we will be moving towards the population coverage which currently stands at 92 percent so once we have all these communication towers, we should be able to reach 100 percent. That is our goal,” Chaaba said.
