‘He can arrest us all,’ party leader, Fube, calls out Hichilema govt over arrest of opposition politicians

Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) leader, Kelvin Fube, has said President Hakainde Hichilema can arrest all opposition leaders if he wants.

“He can arrest us all if he wants, but the writing is on the wall that his days are numbered come 2026 he will have to test his own medicine,” Fube said.

He said the United Party for National Development (UPND ) should concentrate its energies toward reducing the high cost of essential goods than embarking on alleged frivolous arrest of political opponents.

On Tuesday, Socialist Party leader, Fred M’membe, was summoned and subsequently arrested for alleged libel while incarcerated at Woodlands Police station.

Fube said in a statement on Tuesday that the government should attend to high cost of living than be preoccupied with the arrest of political rivals .

“Zambians were expecting a leadership which must address the sky rocketing cost of living, the free falling Kwacha, KCM and Mopani impasse, the rising fuel prices, unemployment, destitution etc and not a government preoccupied with fixing opposition leaders,” he said.

Fube said his party was concerned over the eroded and shrinking opposition political freedoms in the country under the UPND government.

“Opposition Political party leaders continue to be arrested on trumped-up charges, all in an effort to silence critical voices speaking against the misrule of President Hakainde Hichilema.”

Fube who backed President Hichilema’s 2021 successful Presidential bid said the UPND should know that arresting opposition leaders would not change his fast-dwindling political clout among Zambians who feel cheated by his government.
