Revenue Authority cautions on online courier fraud

The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has issued an alert to members of the public on online courier scammers using the name of the Authority to defraud individuals.

Oliver Nzala, ZRA Corporate Communications Manager, said the Authority was concerned over high rise of online courier fraud causes in which unsuspecting members of the public are swindled by online scammers.

Nzala said on Tuesday that members of the public should avoid succumbing to online scammers as long as they never ordered anything online.

“Clients should never send mobile money to the random callers. ZRA services are online and taxpayers are free to pay through a preferred platform. Always ask for a tax assessment and insist to pay taxes yourself.

“This way, you flag off any fraud because banks cannot accept payment to a forged payment reference number,” Nzala said.

He said ZRA had noted that victims of this vice received either emails, calls or text messages that a parcel was sent to them but alleged that the authority had held on to the parcel on grounds of unpaid taxes.

On that account, he explained, victims were asked to send a certain amount of money to clear the “taxes.”

“However, prolonged stories around clearance and release of the miracle gift develops after sending the money, one after another, each tale more entangled than before.

“We aencourage taxpayers to always call the ZRA call centre, in case of doubt, to help you with the correct details about alleged parcels,” Nzala said.
