Mines and Mineral Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, says the United Party for National Development (UPND ) government is determined to bring sanity in the mining industry.
Kabuswe told a fully packed mine suppliers and contractors consultative meeting in Kitwe on Friday that he runs a ‘mafia’ Ministry.

“I run a Mafia Ministry, there are a lot of bottlenecks in the administration of mines in the country but I am equal to the task, issues are being resolved one by one, this government will not rest until sanity is brought to the mining industry,” Kabuswe said.
He said the coming in of the Mineral Commission would bring sanity in the mining sector, which he said was characterized by confusion.
Kabuswe said unlike the Mining Safety Department, which could be compromised, the Commission would be a proper watchdog to police the mining industry in the country.
Also in attendance was Association of Mine Contractors president, Costa Mwaba, who called for a strong local content policy to empower local suppliers among others.
The Minister called for the meeting as part of the government’s consultative process in the ongoing negotiations between government and Vedanta over Konkola Copper Mine (KCM).
The consultation was also about the impending taking over of Mopani Copper Mine (MCM) by a new investor after government through ZCCM-IH shortlisted four companies two weeks ago.
