Waste management App to aid collection of garbage in Lusaka developed

A local innovator, Musekiwa Moyo, has developed an application called “MABIN APP” that will assist people in the management of the 1.5 million tonnes of garbage, which piles up on a daily basis in Lusaka.

According to Moyo, the “MABIN APP” connects people in their localities to a waste management company or Garbage collection companies who collect waste according to schedule.

Moyo told Zambia Monitor that clients only need to download the MABIN Application and get connected to the Garbage Collecting Companies and make an order like they do for other services.

He said the MABIN APP was currently being piloted in Lusaka’s Kamwala South area where it had been working efficiently and people are appreciating the technology.

“We see this everyday where these garbage collecting companies come once in a week or month and this result in Garbage pilling up in the back yard however with this application, once you order at your own convenience, garbage will be collected,” Moyo said.

He said the application was promoting efficiently and trust from clients in the waste management companies who were also being held accountable on which dumpsite they were disposing off the garbage.

“Our initial plan was to have recycling points by placing containers in compounds and wait for them to fill up to collect and later collect for recycling at a particular plant before the rest can be disposed off,” Moyo said.

He said although the MABIN Application received some rejection at the beginning from people in Kamwala South when it was introduced late year, people were now appreciating its effectiveness and it will be rolled out to the rest of the City.

Moyo said with the help of World Wild Fund (WWF) for Nature Zambia and MTN Zambia, he intends to procure his own trucks, which would be servicing such routes in order to increase the presence of companies.
