President Hakainde Hichilema has encouraged the Copper Queens to remain focused as they play their maiden FIFA World Cup game in New Zealand.
With the Copper Queens four days away from facing Japan in the opening Group C match at Waikato stadium in Hamilton, Hichilema believes the Copper Queens must keep their eyes on the ball and focus on competing at the biggest football stage.
The Head of State said this when he spoke to the Copper Queens via phone at State House in Lusaka on Monday.
The virtual meeting was attended by Minister of Sports, Youth and Art Elvis Nkandu, his Permanent Secretary, Kangwa Chileshe, Football Association of Zambia General Secretary, Reuben Kamanga, Copper Queens players in Hamilton and State House staff.
He said the players should not pay attention to what they were hearing in the media but keep their eyes on the ball and ensure that they conquer the odds.
“My government will ensure that all administrative issues will be sorted out and I have already talked to the Minister of Finance and other people from the corporate world so that you do not lack anything,” Hichilema said.
He further advised the officials not to hesitate to communicate with the Ministry of Sports whenever they face any challenges affecting the players.
Copper Queens team captain, Barbra Banda, requested the Head of State to consider finding ways of promoting the players who are coming from the army.
Banda also asked President Hichilema to consider offering the players land as a form of empowerment for the girls whose football lifespan is short.
