Mauritius’ loss keeps Zambia in COSAFA cup, Chipolopolo to face S’Africa in semi-final match

Defending champions Zambia will this Friday face hosts South Africa in the semi-final of the ongoing COSAFA Cup.

Chipolopolo were confirmed as the best runner-up when Mauritius narrowly lost by a goal to nil to Mozambique in their last Group C encounter played Wednesday.

The result means Zambia has a date with South Africa in a match that will be played at 18:00 hours two days from now.

The line up for the semi-final is now complete with Malawi taking on Lesotho in the first match semi, which will also be played on Friday at 15:00 hours.

Both matches will be played at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.

Lesotho had already been crowned winners of Group C before the final games were played but Mauritius had the chance to pip Zambia to a position in the last four as the best-placed runner-up, but only if they could beat Mozambique by four unanswered goals.

But that was almost mission impossible and Mozambique claimed a 1-0 victory to end their run in the competition on a positive note, to the relief of Chipolopolo.

Zambia was in cruise control against Seychelles Tuesday leading 4 goals to nil with ten minutes left in the match but some lapses in concentration led to the Moses Sichone tutored lads conceding two late needless goals.

Had Zambia kept a clean sheet, Mauritius would have been required to beat Mozambique by eight unanswered goals, a mathematically possible but realistically impossible feat.

Instead, it was Mozambique who did a favour for Zambia in stunning fashion as Ali Abudo collected the ball on the left-hand side of the box and lobbed Mauritius goalkeeper Kevin Jean-Louis.

In the other Group C encounter, which was a dead rubber, Angola defeated Lesotho 4 goals to 2.
