‘Dr Hichilema’ trends as Ghanaian university awards president honorary doctorate degree

The news of President Hakainde Hichilema acquiring an honorary doctorate has been making rounds on the social media.

Social media enthusiasts have taken to the internet to congratulate President Hakainde Hichilema for acquiring on an honorary doctorate in Ghana where he is currently attending a state visit.

President Hichilema was among four individuals, among them former President of Ghana, John Kufuor, to be awarded the Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) by Valley View University of Ghana.

Many social media users jumped on the Facebook platform to congratulate the President, with a good number of them referring to the head of state as Dr.

Following President Hichilema’s announcement via his official Facebook page to 1.6 million followers, hundreds of netizens flooded the comments section addressing him as Doctor.

Meanwhile, MMD leader, Nevers Mumba, and Technology and Science Minister, Felix Mutati, were among hundreds of people to congratulate the President for the academic honour.

“Congratulations Mr President for this distinguished honor of Honoris Causa, a Doctor of Humane Letters.
Zambia celebrates with you,” Dr Mumba posted.

However, President Hichilema clarified that ‘Mr President’ still remains his official title of choice.

“I graciously accept and value this Honorary Degree in recognition of our commitment to democracy, freedom, and our Christian faith. However, my official title remains as “Mr. President,” the current and customary prefix of the State,” President Hichilema stated via the official Facebook page.

The President is currently in Ghana attending a three day state visit.
