Ex-Luapula Province Minister, Chilundika, arrested; may face charges of illegal mining

Police in Lusaka have arrested, Derricky Chilundika, former Luapula Province Minister for allegedly carrying out mining activities without a licence.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday said Mr. Chilundika was arrested because his mining activities are contrary
to Section 12(1)(3) of the Mines and Minerals Act Number 11 of 2015.

Mwale said it is alleged that the suspect, while acting together with others, between 4th and 13th January, 2023, did mine 23 tonnes of Sugilite Mineral Ore in Chembe District without a licence.

“He is detained in Police custody waiting to be formally charged,” he said.

Chilundika was arrested barely a few hours after President Hakainde Hichilema announced his sacked.
