Court sentences two men to 12 years imprisonment for vandalising ZESCO facility

The Ndola High Court has sentenced, Mwewa Kabunda, and Michael Saili, to twelve years imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of vandalizing a ZESCO Limited transformer.

Details of the matter are that on July 14, 2022, Kabunda, aged 43, and Saili, 37, of Chief Chiwala’s area of Ndola while acting together vandalized a ZESCO Limited transformer number NND 0584 leading to loss of power.

Zesco Senior Manager for Corporate communications, Caristo Chitamfya, confirmed the conviction of the duo in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

Chitamfya said the accused further punctured a 185 millimeter squared cable valued at K6, 350.

“The duo who were arrested last year appeared before high court judge Musonda on June 30, 2023 before being sentenced to twelve years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from July 5, 2022 after being found guilty of “vandalism of public or private property,” he said.

Chitamfya advised the public to desist from any acts of vandalism that are detrimental to the corporation’s quest to deliver services, efficiently and effectively.
