Women table tennis team qualifies for senior African championships billed for Tunisia

Zambia Women Table Tennis team has qualified to the Senior African Championships, which will be held in Tunisia in September this year.

First Secretary for Press at the Zambian High Commission to Botswana, Julia Malunga, confirmed the development to Zambia Monitor on Saturday.

Malunga said this will also act as a qualifier for the World Table Tennis Championships, which will be held in South Korea in 2024.

She said the Women’s Team beat Botswana 3 -1 to come out third after South Africa and Angola respectively.

“The Women’s and Men’s Team have both minted Bronze at the ongoing regional five qualifying games in Gaborone however, the Men’s team has not qualified to the Senior African Championships,” Malunga said.

Team Manager, Martin Chewe, said the ladies put up an outstanding performance and that he was delighted that they had qualified.

“I am very delighted that the Women’s Team has qualified to the Senior African Championships. The region has now recognized Zambia’s performance, it is now improving. And we also have the largest delegation here because of the support that we got from the Zambian Government,” Chewe said.

The International Table Tennis Federation Southern Africa Region World Qualifiers is currently underway in Gaborone with seven countries participating, namely Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
