The Road Development Agency (RDA) has partnered with Zambia National Service (ZNS) to undertake rehabilitation and maintenance works on the dilapidated Livingstone-Sesheke Road at the cost of K30 million.
The Service is expected to carry out rehabilitation and spot pothole patching of the worst sections of the 97 kilometres stretch to make it more motorable and allow for smooth flow of traffic especially during the rainy season.
RDA acting Chief Executive Officer, Grace Mutembo, disclosed that government has so far released K5 million to ZNS to kick-start rehabilitation works on the road.
Speaking when officials from the Agency and ZNS inspected the road to appreciate the state of disrepair, on Wednesday, Mutembo explained that the Agency has opted to partner with ZNS owing to the institution’s proven ability, efficiency, quality and timely delivery of works.
“We are closely working with ZNS because the institution assures us promptness in mobilizing on site as well as ability to do quality works within the agreed time frame,” she said.
Mutembo lamented the deplorable state of the road which had remained unattended to for decades and indicated that RDA was looking at short term and long term interventions to improve the status of that economic road.
She disclosed that government’s long term plan was to employ financing strategies that will fund the re-construction of the entire 192 kilometres.
ZNS Commander, Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi has given matching orders to Service personnel deployed to the project to ensure construction works are completed within four months, two months earlier than the initially allocated time frame.

Solochi assured the Agency that his Command will ensure repair works on the Livingstone-Sesheke Road were completed on time before the onset of the rains.
The Commander said the Service will also ensure value for money was achieved alongside timely delivery of the project.
“This project will be another litmus test to prove that what ZNS is doing is of good quality. Our marriage with RDA is doing very well; we are flourishing and going forward. We expect to do more work on behalf of the Agency in terms of road development, maintenance and management,” he said.
