Activities of quack doctors, false prophets trouble men’s network, group calls for regulation

The Zambia National Men’s Network for Gender and Development (ZNMNGD) has called for the regulation of traditional healers as some of them have been involved in sexual atrocities.

Organisation National Coordinator, Nelson Banda, in a statement issued on Sunday in Lusaka said recently some Congolese traditional healers have been been involved in sexual scandals in Nsama and Lundazi districts.

Banda said in Nsama district a Congolese traditional healer raped a 21 year old woman on the pretext that it was a way of helping her to conceive, while in Lundazi district another Congolese traditional healer raped a 34 year old when her relatives took her to the traditional healer to be cured of epilepsy.

He noted that the Central Business District in Lusaka ‘s Cairo Road and some residential areas in many districts in the country are littered with posters were traditional healers mostly from East African countries are encouraging men to take sexual boosters to enlarge their manhood.

“The sexual boosters have implications on the health of men and their partners and could ingredients for sexual crimes as they have not been tested for ethical standards.

In 2019, ZNMNGD raised this matter with the hope that relevant authorities would take it up but a check along Cairo road reveals that the problem still exists,” Banda said.

He also called on local authorities countrywide to prosecute traditional healers who are pasting posters with messages encouraging men to take sexual boosters to increase their libido, which could be a health risk for men to engage in sexual crimes including defiling their children.

“We are also calling on authorities to regulate the so called prophets who are enticing single young women to attend over night prayers to be prayed for in the hope that they would find a husband as this might be trigger points for sexual violence,” Banda said.

He said that the country is experiencing a lot of gender based violence and therefore it is important that all citizens are alert.
