The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has instituted investigations into the fire incident that occurred on June 3, 2023 in Makeni area of Lusaka District involving road tank vehicles.
Public Relations Manager, Namukolo Kasumpa, said while investigations are still ongoing, preliminary findings have established that on Saturday June 3, 2023, around 11:50 hours fire broke out at Domali Garage, located on Plot No. 9463 off Kafue Road in Makeni area of Lusaka District burning four road tanker vehicles.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday, Kasumpa said two of the tankers were used for the transportation of petroleum products, whilst the other two (2) were for the transportation of molasses and water.
She said the Board has subsequently directed that the two respective licensees submit comprehensive incident reports detailing among others, the cause of the accident and measures undertaken to ensure accidents of similar nature do not re-occur in line with their standard transportation licence conditions.
“Though fortunately there were no fatalities nor injuries recorded and damages were only restricted to the four road tankers, the ERB wishes to reiterate its directives to Importers/ suppliers, distributors and transporters of petroleum products to desist from the unlawful parking of fuel tankers in undesignated areas for public safety,” Kasumpa said.
She said non-adherence to licence conditions specifically with respect to parking in undesignated areas and the use of unauthorised routes for fuel tankers constitutes a breach of license conditions and calls for enforcement action against erring entities.
“The Board further implores members of the public to report all cases of unauthorised parking of fuel tank vehicles in undesignated locations to the ERB,” Kasumpa said.
