Leading opposition party, PF, bemoans arrest, intimidation of members by Hichilema administration

The Patriotic Front (PF) has bemoaned the alleged continued harassment of its members by the UPND government using law enforcement agencies.

Party vice president, Given Lubinda, recalled that in just the month of May, several members of the central Committee were either arrested to answer unknown charges or raided by law enforcement agencies.

“There are a lot of party members who were facing these similar arrests and some matters are before the courts but we are ready to face more charges, if he wants he can arrest all of us but he shall not manage to arrest the spirit of the PF,” he said in an interview in Lusaka recently.

Lubinda said it was disheartening that Members of Parliament were being denied bond, they were being forced to provide sureties as if they were not elected members of the house that made laws when acutely the police could guarantee bail on their own when the person was of fixed abode.

He alleged that Members of Parliament were being harassed by the police but parliament was not there to protect them.

Meanwhile, Lubinda said the unprovoked and malicious attacks on the church and its leaders by president Hakainde Hichilema had been followed by unguarded statements and insults by his followers against the clergy.

He likened what Hichilema said against the priest to what king Henry the second said in 1170 “Will not rid me of this troublesome priest” that led to the murder of Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Cantebury.

“Because of what the president said all his supporters were busy insulting the priests and calling them names. Expressing anger and ridicule in a public place and the head of state was undeserving of a leader,” Lubinda said.

Lubinda said all well meaning Zambians should stand and defend the church from UPND attacks because what the clergy were saying, according to him, were the things that the people were experiencing.
