Itezhi-Tezhi Member of Parliament, Twaambo Mutinta, is demanding that Lukanga Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) hands over the operations of water and sewerage services to Southern Province Water and Sewerage Company (SWSC).

Mutinta told Zambia Monitor in Itezhi-Itezhi Constituency on Monday that this must be done as guided by the Statutory Instrument (SI) No. 114 of 2021 that transferred the District from Central Province back to Southern Province.

He said the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation gave the water utility firm a deadline of up to March 17, 2023 for Lukanga Water and Sewerage Company to surrender operations to Southern Province Water and Sewerage Company.

“Despite resolutions having been passed by the shareholders who are Itezhi-Tezhi District Council after a stakeholder held at the Ministry with a deadline given up to March 17, 2023 for Lukanga to surrender operations, the struggling water utility company has ignored the resolutions and continues to run water functions in Itezhi Tezhi,” Mutinta said.

He has disclosed that it’s unfortunate that Lukanga which has been in operation in Itezhi Tezhi for over 10 years has failed to operate in an efficient manner and has denied Itezhi Tezhi resident access to reliable water supply.

Mutinta has called on the regulator National Water and Supply Council (NWASCO) to intervene and ensure that Lukanga expedites the transfer process and hands over Itezhi Tezhi to Southern Province Water and Sanitation Company before residents take extremist actions against the company.

“The residents of Itezhi Tezhi are dissatisfied with service delivery of the company in the last 10 years and cited erratic water supply, inconsistency bills and lack of expansion and investment of the fester service to growing areas of the district,” he said.
