Online taxi drivers are planning an indefinite shutdown of their operations in Lusaka and Copperbelt as a result of alleged exploitation and poor conditions of service from online taxi companies such as Yango, Ulendo and others.
According to circular dated May 15, 2023, Online Taxi Drivers Association of Zambia President, Lukas Chanda, said there will be no driver from any corners of Lusaka and the Copperbelt who is going to carry a client through a mobile application and this goes for all drivers starting from as early as 06:00am till indefinite.
Chanda said this exercise is likely to continue if these e-Hailing service companies do not comply by organizing themselves to come to a round table discussion.
He has called on all the drivers to join hands and cooperate, under unity of purpose with the association and fight for their plight.
Chanda said that the drivers have had enough of the exploitation of youths by the greedy operators and it is high time the narrative was changed for the better, especially for the sake of the next generation.

He claimed that the association has reached out to over 3000 drivers through mobilization, awareness and that non amongst them will be operating during the course of the shutdown until agreements with the hailing companies concluded and the fares tally the drivers cost of operation.
“YANGO branded black plate registered vehicle that will be spotted on the Zambian roads starting tomorrow will be impounded under citizen’s arrest and escorted to the nearest traffic Police station to be charged as an offender,” Chanda said.
