A Zambian businessman has been shot dead by unknown people in Central Johannesburg, South Africa, authorities have said.
This is according to a statement issued on Tuesday in Johannesburg by Tamara Nyirenda, the First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at the Zambia High Commission in South Africa.
Alfred Sampa, 46, an entrepreneur, was shot on Monday, May 15, 2023 around 12:30 hours on his way to City Deep market where he went to buy his merchandise.
Sampa is said to have booked a taxi for his errands but while on the way to the market, the taxi driver noticed that unknown people were trailing them.
The unknown people overtook the taxi, blocked it and shot Mr. Sampa.
It is said that after the assailants sped off, the taxi driver is said to have rushed Mr. Sampa to Southrand Hospital in Johannesburg where he eventually died.
Wife to the deceased, Beaullah Sampa, confirmed the development to the Zambia High Commission in Pretoria on Monday and further stated that the matter had been reported to Moffatview Police Station in South Africa.

Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Inonge Mwenya, said the Mission is saddened by the death of Mr. Sampa, and conveyed a message of condolences to the bereaved family.
Mwenya said the Mission will keenly follow the updates from the investigations being conducted by the South African Police.
